AFTER a frustrating outing in the Australian Grand Prix on March 7, Jaguar will be boosted by strong local support in Sunday’s Petronas Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang Circuit.

Malaysia’s YTL Corporation yesterday announced an associate partnership deal to support the British outfit in the Malaysian Grand Prix, with the view of extending the relationship in the future.

As part of the deal, both the Jaguar cars – piloted by Australian Mark Webber and Austrian Christian Klein – will carry the YTL logo on their nose cones for the entire race weekend.

YTL Corp managing director Tan Sri Dr Francis Yeoh said it was also an extension of the company’s support for motorsports which began with the sponsorship of the ‘Pangkor Laut Chicane’ at the Sepang Circuit in 1999.

“We believe this is the right thing to do. Petronas led the way by sponsoring the Sauber team and now we are well known. Even when I go skiing in Switzerland, people seem to relate me with Petronas,” said Francis during a Press conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

“But this is more than that.”

”We want to help project Kuala Lumpur as a world class city, and we
are doing our part as a gift to the city,” he added.

Following that function, Webber and Klein attended a cocktail reception arranged for them by main sponsors HSBC at a leading hotel in the city.

Welcoming them was HSBC deputy chairman and chief executive Zarir J. Cama, who made known the company’s pride in being associated with the Jaguar team.

“HSBC is proud to be part of the Fl fever in Malaysia and globally through our partnership with Jaguar Racing.

This is not a new direction for the brand, but more the nest use of our logo in a confined space,” said Cama,

Both drivers pledged to return the support with an improved performance in this Sunday’s race.
